In cooking recipes, salt is often kept in a secondary position relative to other ingredients: everyone knows it’s needed, and it’s taken for granted.
But if it’s missing, it shows. You feel it immediately.

Not everything that has importance and a strong presence gets mentioned and brought to attention all the time.

The vast majority of machines in cloud deployments (including network devices, gateways, probes, and other accessories) are Linux-based: an April 2026 study finds that “90% of all public cloud infrastructure globally runs on” Linux.

These numbers are no surprise, because over the years Linux distributions have managed to scale up more and more: exactly what’s required for complex, highly structured distributed environments like the infrastructures that make up the cloud.

Let’s look behind all these stacks and multi-tier architectures, where real added value is created, stable and immersed in the silence of its imperturbable resilience.

IaaS and PaaS: Infrastructure as a Service and Platform as a Service

The infrastructural backbone of cloud computing finds solid foundations on Linux, where the vast majority of virtual machine instances, containers, and network devices operate at very high performance levels on a „24/7/365“ basis, managing vast numbers of users and applications while guaranteeing uptime values in the order of 99.999%.

These numbers come from very strong intrinsic characteristics:

Lightness: A „minimal“ Linux instance can occupy just a few tens of MB of RAM, while its Windows Server counterpart requires far more overhead, both for a potential graphical interface and for basic services.

Modularity: In Linux it’s possible to remove everything that isn’t needed, with a very high degree of customization. In a cloud context, less code and fewer components means fewer bugs and a smaller attack surface for potential attackers.

Scalability: Thanks to Linux’s modularity and the absence of per-instance licensing costs, it’s possible to create, configure, and retire thousands of nodes (servers or containers) in seconds by automating processes through scripts. This allows an infrastructure to expand automatically to handle high traffic peaks without having to suffer the heavy overhead typical of significant loads, always guaranteeing maximum utilization of available resources.

Automation and Infrastructure as Code

A significant part of the value of the modern cloud lies not so much in access to resources, but in the ability to govern them in a coherent and repeatable way.
The Infrastructure as Code approach has transformed infrastructure to be testable and automatable, reducing manual errors and increasing operational predictability. Linux, thanks to its easy programmability and deep integration with automation and orchestration tools, represents the ideal terrain on which these models take shape, making it possible to manage complex environments as if they were extensions of the software itself.

Hybrid Cloud and Operational Continuity

The evolution toward hybrid and multi-cloud models has shifted the focus from a single platform to operational continuity across different environments. In these environments, Linux acts as a unifying factor, making it possible to maintain the same tools, competencies, and management model across traditional data centers and public cloud environments. This continuity reduces dependency on vendors and third parties, making the infrastructure more resilient, adaptable, and sustainable over the long term.

Reducing operational friction within complex infrastructures: this is what Linux does best. Its widespread adoption in servers and distributed systems derives from the ability to offer predictable, controllable, and consistent behavior over time, even as scale grows. It is this structural reliability, more than any single technology, that makes Linux a fundamental component of the infrastructures on which today’s services and platforms are built.

The Need for Expertise

For the sake of fundamental reliability, as well as efficiency, in large deployments, the competencies required to design, manage, and maintain complex Linux infrastructures cannot be improvised. The LPIC-3 series of certifications from the Linux Professional Institute represent an internationally recognized standard for validating advanced operational capabilities in the following areas:

High availability

Security

Virtualization and containerization

Infrastructure resilience and service continuity in enterprise contexts are the key concepts that underpin modern cloud infrastructures and, often invisibly, the processes of the everyday world.

<< Read the previous article of this series

Have you ever noticed?
