I hope this series has given a sense of how the data mosaic works: how small and innocent-looking details about you can be combined to uncover sensitive information. Data collection will only improve over time. Theoretically, you can be identified by the way you walk<\/a>, and Wifi signals can identify people through walls<\/a>. The next time you talk with someone at a meeting or a party, your conversation may be recorded by a tiny device<\/a> that made a big splash at CES 2026. Nike and Adidas are adding sensors to shoes<\/a> to \u00ab\u00a0influence how the mind works.\u00a0\u00bb People are entrusting private data and confidential legal conversations to AI chatbots, whose privacy protections are weak and leaky<\/a>. And many governments want to force intrusive identification systems<\/a> onto the internet as a whole.<\/p>\n

But these advances are responding to the demands of an increasingly complex society. What must happen to autonomy, personal choice, and human connections in our world of more than eight billion people where the pace of life seems to be catching up to that of our computers? We can’t shop, work, or engage in civic life in old-fashioned ways.<\/p>\n

Data collection presents us with dilemmas in personal autonomy. For instance, if you opt in to data collection by the devices in your car\u2014and if you drive carefully\u2014you can get a substantial discount on your auto insurance.<\/p>\n

But then you have a faceless computer program monitoring every touch of your hands and feet. The program might determine that you are reckless because you slammed on the brakes, not realizing that by doing so you saved the life of the child who rode his bike suddenly out from a driveway. And in general, whenever algorithms are based on existing behavior, bias and discrimination are very hard to avoid.<\/p>\n

This article series was reviewed by Magdalena G\u00f3ralczyk, partner, founder, and head of data protection at White Label Consultancy<\/a>, a global cyber security and data protection consulting firm. She provides an excellent summary of the problems created by modern data collection:<\/p>\n

\u00ab\u00a0For me, the reality of the collected data collections is that each separately feels needed and useful, often for the individual themselves. It is, after all, great that your vacuum cleaner knows how to vacuum in the corners and doesn’t eat the cable. It may seem every single time that the price is small: the reading of my blood pulse, the attachment of my age to a customer account, the coffee machine connecting to the producer so they send me a new water filter. Yet what they slowly take away from me is any pretense of freedom and independence\u2014because the joint impact is a life that is largely driven from the outside, while we hardly even notice that all this information is giving institutions more and more control over us.\u00a0\u00bb<\/p>\n

For lack of space, this series has barely touched on the additional risks that occur from identity theft and other malicious attacks, which often combine data stolen in breaches with publicly available data on individuals.<\/p>\n

I can’t start to answer the questions that privacy violations raise: how to prevent large, faceless institutions from becoming even bigger and more distant, how to deal with errors and bias, what limits to set and how to enforce them, whether to regulate data collection or analysis or the consequences of such analysis.<\/p>\n

But I have tried to lay out the extent of modern data collection, while showing that limits still exist, and that some of that data is useful and necessary. If I have helped readers make some decisions within the narrow leeway given to us to control our own personal data, I will count the series a success.<\/p>\n
