We will explore together where free and open source software comes from and how you can turn this knowledge into a solid professional career in the world of Information Technology.

Lesson 1: From Big Labs to Your Computer Screen

To understand the Linux world, it helps to take a short trip back in time. In the late 1960s, a group of engineers created UNIX, a robust operating system designed for mainframes. Decades later, in 1983, an enthusiast named Richard Stallman felt that software was becoming too closed and proprietary, so he founded the GNU Project with the idea of building a completely free operating system. GNU created almost all the necessary tools, but they were missing a key piece: the system’s “engine” or kernel.

Enter Linus Torvalds in 1991. As a university student in Finland, Linus decided to create his own kernel as a hobby and shared it on the Internet so anyone could use and improve it and that is how what we know today as GNU/Linux was born.

Today, we don’t just install plain “Linux,” but rather a distribution (or “distro”), which is simply the system packaged and ready to use based on the needs of each person or company. A few of the most common distributions are:

Ubuntu and Debian: Fantastic options if you are just starting out. Very popular for personal use, development, and cloud servers due to their massive community and ease of use.

Red Hat Enterprise Linux and Fedora: The top choices for the corporate world and large enterprises looking for maximum stability and professional support. Red Hat Enterprise Linux is more stable (and costs money) while Fedora is faster-moving and free for download.

Arch Linux: Designed for those who want to build their system from scratch and understand down to the last detail how every component works.

SUSE and openSUSE: Very strong in the European corporate sector and found in critical infrastructure.

Even if you don’t see a Linux computer in your home or office, Linux is everywhere: it powers practically all the supercomputers on the planet, most web servers, and smart devices, and is the foundation on which Android runs on the smartphone in your hand right now.

Lesson 2: Free Software in Your Daily Professional Life

There is a myth that to work professionally you need to pay for expensive licenses. The reality is that the open-source ecosystem has mature, powerful, and respected alternatives for almost any commercial tool you can imagine.

If you look at the applications you regularly use, you will see how present open source is:

In web browsing: Compared to options like Microsoft Edge or Safari, we have Mozilla Firefox and the open base Chromium, which prioritize privacy and open standards.

In office productivity: To draft documents or create spreadsheets without relying on Microsoft Office, projects like LibreOffice offer everything needed for daily work.

In graphic design: Comprehensive tools like GIMP for photo editing or Inkscape for vector drawing prove that creativity doesn’t depend on software price tags.

At the heart of the Internet: The servers that display the web pages you visit daily mainly run Apache or Nginx. Behind them, massive databases like PostgreSQL or MariaDB manage information efficiently.

In programming: Modern and versatile languages like Python, PHP, or the open version of Java (OpenJDK) are completely free and drive the software development industry.

Lesson 3: Freedom, Community, and How People Make a Living in Open Source

When we hear “open source” or “free software,” we usually think of something “free of charge,” but the concept goes way beyond price. It is about freedom. Richard Stallman defined four fundamental freedoms that sum up this philosophy very well: you have the freedom to run the program for any purpose, to study how it works inside and modify it, to share copies with friends or colleagues, and to publish your improvements so the entire community benefits.
To protect these freedoms, there are different types of software licenses, which are basically the rules of the game:

Copyleft Licenses (such as the GNU GPL): These are protective licenses. They tell anyone using the code: “You can use and modify this software freely, but if you create a new program based on it and distribute it, that new program must also be free.”

Permissive Licenses (such as MIT or Apache): These offer much more flexibility. They allow you to take the code, modify it, and even integrate it into a private commercial product without the obligation to release your modified version.

Creative Commons: These licenses are used mostly for non-code content, such as books, images, or educational documentation, allowing authors to decide how their works can be shared.

You might wonder: if the code is free and anyone can download it, how do companies make money? The answer lies in added value. Multibillion-dollar companies like Red Hat or Canonical don’t sell the software itself, but rather guaranteed 24/7 technical support, custom security patches, corporate training, and cloud infrastructure services.

Lesson 4: From Curiosity to the Job Market

Learning Linux is not just an interesting hobby; it is one of the most sought-after skills in today’s tech sector. If you handle yourself well in this environment, doors open to highly valued professional roles:

System Administration (SysAdmin): The classic role responsible for keeping servers healthy, secure, and running smoothly without interruption.

DevOps / SRE Culture and Methodology: Professionals connecting software development with operations, automating tasks, and deploying applications at scale.

Cybersecurity: Most security audit and analysis tools (like Kali Linux) run on Linux. To protect a system, you first need to know how it works from the inside.

Cloud Specialist: Whether in Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud, or Azure, the vast majority of virtual servers sustaining modern applications run on Linux.

To prove your knowledge in job interviews, there are internationally recognized certifications. Starting with the Linux Essentials certificate is the ideal first step. Later, you can move toward more specialized paths like LPIC-1.

To assuage any initial hesitation you have, you don’t need to be an expert from day one. It all starts by getting comfortable with the command terminal using simple instructions like these, which run from the terminal or shell.

Find out which system we are working on:

uname -a

See which user is currently using the terminal:

whoami

List files in the current folder with their details:

ls -la

Confirm which directory you are currently in:

pwd

Mastering these basics will give you tremendous confidence to take your first steps and build an exciting career in the open-source ecosystem.

<< Read the previous part of this series

If you have ever wondered how the techno … Read more

[49
221
304
630,631
post-41130","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-south-america","country-peru","language-english

Linux Essentials 2.0: The Linux Community and a Career in Open Source Software - Linux Professional Institute (LPI)

<meta name="description" content="Explore Linux, open source software, distributions, licensing, and career opportunities.
