That is only the visible tip of a much larger technology stack.

Modern AI is not just about models. Behind every model sits enormous amounts of data, specialized hardware like GPUs and dedicated accelerators, compute clusters, and networking. That infrastructure is what turns a model into something that can be trained, deployed, and run at scale.

Linux has been part of that infrastructure for a long time, even when it stays invisible to the end user. From HPC systems for scientific computing to modern GPU clusters, from cloud to edge, Linux provides the foundation for a large part of the software and hardware ecosystem AI runs on.

That is why it is limiting to think of AI as just another category of software product. AI is becoming a computing platform, and services, applications, and entire new infrastructures are being built on top of it.

The AI Stack

When we interact with an AI system, the model feels like the whole story. It is not. The model is just one layer in a much larger platform. Training, deploying, and running a model at scale takes a full technology stack connecting software and hardware.

At the base sits raw compute: CPUs, GPUs, and specialized accelerators like TPUs (Tensor Processing Units) and NPUs (Neural Processing Units), usually paired with high-performance storage and interconnects. Above the hardware come containers and orchestration, spreading workloads across anything from a single server to clusters with thousands of accelerators. Inside those containers or guest operating systems, drivers and runtimes let software use the hardware resources, while frameworks like PyTorch or JAX give developers the tools to build and run models. At the top sit the models themselves and the applications we interact with every day.

Linux has been part of that infrastructure for a long time, even when it stays invisible to the end user. From HPC systems for scientific computing to modern GPU clusters, from cloud to edge, Linux provides the foundation for a large part of the software and hardware ecosystem AI runs on.

Linux sits close to the hardware, but also acts as the foundation the layers above rely on, giving an increasingly diverse hardware ecosystem one common environment to run on.

Linux: The Operating Layer

Linux does not run AI directly. It provides the operating environment that lets the whole stack use the hardware that is available. CPUs, GPUs, memory, storage, networking, and accelerators all need to be managed, coordinated, and made accessible to the software running above them.

That is the kernel’s traditional job: process and memory management, networking and storage, security and isolation, plus hardware interaction through drivers and dedicated subsystems. In AI, that job takes on a new scale. A single workload can involve CPUs, GPUs, and other accelerators at once, along with large amounts of memory and data moving across high-performance networks. Linux becomes the common operating layer between diverse hardware and the software built on top of it, staying the consistent base while frameworks, runtimes, and hardware itself keep evolving fast.

AI is also changing how computing systems get designed. The traditional CPU-and-memory model is giving way to platforms where different components share a workload: CPUs handle general-purpose tasks, GPUs provide parallelism, and specialized accelerators—TPUs, NPUs, custom ASICs—run specific machine learning operations more efficiently. This is the shift from general-purpose to heterogeneous computing, and for Linux it is both a challenge and an opportunity: managing a more varied set of resources while still giving drivers, runtimes, and applications one common way to reach the hardware underneath.

The Challenge: Fragmentation

Specialized hardware brings an unavoidable side effect: fragmentation. GPUs, NPUs, and other accelerators often need their own drivers, runtimes, libraries, and development tools, so an application optimized for one GPU might not move easily to different hardware. Linux gives the ecosystem a common operating base, but it cannot erase these differences on its own. The challenge moves up the stack: drivers, runtimes, frameworks, and standards all need to deliver more portability without giving up hardware-specific optimization. The more specialized the hardware, the more it matters to keep the software built on top of it open and interoperable.

AI Creates New Opportunities for Linux Professionals

AI’s growth is reshaping the skills needed to run the infrastructure behind it. Underneath every model are systems that still need to be installed, configured, secured, monitored, and maintained. For Linux professionals, that means real opportunity: established skills in systems administration, networking, storage, containers, automation, and troubleshooting are now part of AI infrastructure too, alongside understanding GPUs, accelerators, and distributed workloads. It does not mean turning every system administrator into a machine learning expert. It means extending skills that already exist to a new platform, as AI moves from experimentation into production.

Conclusion

If artificial intelligence is becoming a computing platform, Linux is already part of the foundation it is built on. From the large clusters used for training and HPC to cloud and edge infrastructure, its role is not to provide the intelligence, but to make the resources needed to build and run it usable and manageable.
The growing diversity of hardware makes that role even more important. CPUs, GPUs, and accelerators will keep changing, and so will runtimes and frameworks, but the need for a stable, open, flexible operating base stays constant. Linux cannot eliminate fragmentation across the AI ecosystem on its own; proprietary drivers and vendor-specific stacks will keep posing a challenge. It is exactly in a landscape this diverse that Linux’s long-standing strengths (portability, openness, adaptability) matter most.

AI will keep evolving, and so will the hardware it runs on. Linux has already adapted to plenty of computing shifts before this one, and AI is simply the next chapter in that story.

<< Read the previous article of this series | Read the series from the beginning >>

When we talk about artificial intelligence, we picture what we can see and use: chatbots, digital assistants, image generators, tools that analyze data or produce content.
