BLVCK In Tech Linux Hackathon '25: Learning and Innovation

The BLVCK In Tech Linux Hackathon 2025 in Dallas created an inclusive space for learning, networking, and problem-solving. See how it empowered participants to gain hands-on Linux experience.

Building Skills and Community Through Open Source

BLVCK In Tech is a nonprofit that provides training and career advice to a wide range of Black people in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, ranging from high-school students to adult professionals. The BLVCK In Tech Linux Hackathon 2025 took place on February 22, 2025, at the West Dallas Multipurpose Center in Dallas, Texas. Unlike traditional hackathons that focus on intense competition, this event was designed around learning, mentorship, and collaboration, creating an inclusive environment for participants of all experience levels to explore Linux and open source.

Hosted by BLVCK In Tech, a nonprofit dedicated to increasing Black representation in the tech industry, the hackathon gave attendees a beginner-friendly yet challenging opportunity to expand their technical skills. Participants worked alongside industry professionals, tackled four hands-on challenges, and connected with peers in a welcoming, community-driven setting.

“Our goal is to create a space where learning takes precedence over competition,” said Shannon Stinnett, Founder of BLVCK In Tech. “We wanted to empower participants by providing them with real-world skills and connections that will help them thrive in the tech industry.”

A Hands-On Linux Experience

Participants were introduced to foundational Linux concepts through a structured challenge format. Each challenge was designed to strengthen problem-solving skills—a critical ability for building technical excellence. Attendees attempted the tasks independently before instructors guided them through solutions, reinforcing the learning process.

By focusing on real-world applications of open source tools, the event helped demystify Linux for beginners while also offering experienced users an opportunity to refine their expertise. The hackathon’s structure emphasized accessibility and inclusivity, ensuring that everyone, regardless of background, could actively engage with the material.

Strengthening the Open Source Community

Beyond the technical challenges, the hackathon fostered a sense of community through networking opportunities and a challenge coin ceremony, where participants celebrated each others achievements. BLVCK In Tech also used the event to highlight the importance of diversity and inclusion in tech, encouraging partnerships with companies and organizations that support underrepresented groups in the industry.

The event was made possible through community-driven sponsorships, including support from a local Sam’s Club store, community donors, and a Media Partnership with Linux Professional Institute (LPI). These partnerships underscored a shared commitment to equitable access to technology and education.

Looking Ahead

The success of the BLVCK In Tech Linux Hackathon 2025 marks just the beginning. As BLVCK In Tech continues to grow its mentorship, networking, and education initiatives, the organization is set to empower even more Black professionals in tech.

With Linux at the core of many technological innovations, events like this hackathon play a vital role in equipping new learners with the skills to navigate and contribute to the open source ecosystem.
