Linux Professional Institute Releases Linux Essentials Version 2.0

Toronto, 2026-10-15 — Linux Professional Institute (LPI) has just released version 2.0 of its Linux Essentials certificate.

The updates include new exam objectives, updated Learning Materials, and the actual exam and certificate. Version 2.0 is a major release that requires learners and teachers to adjust their exam preparation. The previous version 1.6 will continue to be available for six months after the release of the new version.

“Linux Essentials version 2.0 implements various key changes to the exam. The most important changes include updates to Linux distribution and commonly used open source tools, as well as the transition to systemd, journald, and iproute2”, explains Fabian Thorns, Director of Product Development at LPI. Thorns adds that “The updated objectives now also include the use of SSH to work in remote and cloud environments, as well as various smaller changes to align the skills tested in the exam with recent technological developments, and to also facilitate exam preparation.”

“Along with the exam, an updated version of our Learning Materials will be released,” says Dr. Markus Wirtz, Senior Product Manager. “The materials are already available in English, Spanish, and Portuguese, with additional languages following soon. As usual, LPI’s Learning Materials cover all exam content and include exercises that are designed to support both trainers and teachers as well as self-paced learners.”

The exam will initially be available in English. Translations into French, German, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, and Spanish will be released within the next few months. The old version for each language will be available for six months after the release of the exam update in the respective language.
