MoodleMoot Philippines 2026: Nephila Web at 15 with LPI

The field of education was greatly boosted by Moodle, the free and open source software for course development. Released in 2002, Moodle has been used collaboratively by teachers and curriculum developers to create and share their courses. In the Philippines, Nephila Web Technology Inc. works at the forefront of digital learning, helping schools and institutions across the country adopt scalable and sustainable open source solutions.

And MoodleMoot Philippines 2026 was a landmark event for the Moodle community in Southeast Asia, coinciding with the 15th anniversary of Nephila Web Technology Inc., the only Premium Moodle Partner in the Philippines and a pioneer in the region. Over the past decade, Nephila has worked at the forefront of digital learning, helping schools and institutions across the Philippines adopt scalable and sustainable open source solutions.

Linux Professional Institute (LPI) participated in this year’s edition with both a panel contribution and a booth presence. The relationship between LPI and Nephila Web formally began in 2024 but traces back to EduTech Asia in Singapore in 2023, where the two organizations first connected. Collaboration has grown steadily since, with shared advocacy for open source adoption, LPI certification pathways, and digital transformation across education.

Panel: AI, Security, and Ethics in Learning Management Systems

A central session at MoodleMoot was the panel on AI, Security, and Ethics in Learning Management Systems. The discussion focused on how to use AI to create educational content within Moodle in ways that strengthen learning outcomes without compromising integrity.

As LPI Partner Development and Success Manager (APAC), I contributed to the panel by emphasizing the importance of competency-based job descriptions in which required training and certifications form part of measurable workforce outcomes. My main point was: certifications such as those from LPI work best when they are aligned with concrete employment requirements rather than presented as standalone credentials.

Open Source Foundations for Moodle

Two other panel contributions deserve attention. Roy Plomantes, Nephila Web’s CTO, and Sheryl Villaroman, Nephila’s CEO, both long-time Linux advocates, made the case that Ubuntu is one of the strongest platforms for Moodle deployment. Their argument was practical: Moodle’s flexibility and Linux’s reliability work well together. Open source is not only cost-effective, but provides a strategic foundation for institutions building long-term digital learning infrastructure.

The LPI Booth: Partnership Conversations

Beyond the panel sessions, the LPI booth attracted both local and overseas organizations interested in partnering with LPI to certify their technical teams and students. These conversations demonstrated growing demand for globally recognized open source certifications, particularly in regions where digital education infrastructure is expanding rapidly.
Visitors discussed LPI Partner Programs, Academic Partner pathways, and how LPI certifications can be integrated into existing training programs.

Looking Forward

Nephila Web celebrates 15 years of impact in the Philippine digital education sector this year. MoodleMoot Philippines continues to grow as a regional gathering point for open source learning advocates. The partnership between Nephila Web and LPI reflects shared values: openness, collaboration, and the steady work of supporting learners and institutions in their adoption of open source technologies.

The path ahead involves continued joint work on digital education in the Philippines and across Southeast Asia, ensuring that learners, educators, and institutions have the tools and credentials they need to thrive in an open source future.
