LPI to Offer Linux Essentials 2.0 Beta Exam at FrOSCon 2026

Sankt Augustin/Toronto, 2026-07-29 — Linux Professional Institute (LPI) will offer visitors to FrOSCon 2026, taking place on August 15–16, 2026, in Sankt Augustin, Germany, the opportunity to take the Linux Essentials 2.0 Beta exam as a paper-based test. The beta exam is available for €50, giving candidates the chance to earn the updated entry-level certification ahead of its official release in October 2026.

A Practical Introduction to Linux

Linux Essentials is LPI’s most popular entry-level certificate, providing foundational knowledge of Linux, open source software, and command-line skills. Version 2.0 has been updated to reflect current developments in cloud computing, IT infrastructure, and modern Linux environments, equipping learners with practical skills for starting their journey in open source.

“Linux is essential across virtually every area of IT—from cloud platforms and cybersecurity to embedded systems and AI,” said Fabian Thorns, Director of Product Development at Linux Professional Institute. “With Linux Essentials 2.0, we’re ensuring that newcomers gain the skills that are most relevant in today’s education and workplace while maintaining our proven vendor-neutral approach.”

Beta Results Support Exam Development

Beta exams play an essential role in the development of new certifications. They enable LPI to validate exam content using real-world candidate data and perform the statistical analysis required before a new exam is released. For this reason, exam results will only be published after the entire beta period has concluded.

Candidates who pass the beta exam will receive the standard Linux Essentials 2.0 certificate. Those who do not pass may request that the beta exam result be removed from their personal LPI profile.

The Linux Essentials 2.0 Beta exam at FrOSCon will be offered exclusively on-site as a paper-based exam for €50. Registration is now open at https://www.lpi.org/event/froscon-26/. The number of available exam seats is limited.

Discounted LPI Exams at FrOSCon

LPI will also offer its regular certification exams at special discounted rates during FrOSCon. Thanks to the sponsorship of channel partners Open Source Certification GmbH (OSC) and Linux-Training Werner Fischer, candidates can take:

  • All other LPI exams for €110 instead of €176
