Linux Professional Institute Exams Go Online

Good news for all who want to take their Linux Professional Institute (LPI) exam online: as of today this is possible. For this purpose LPI relies on the proven online exam solution OnVUE from Pearson VUE. Currently available exams are Linux Essentials and LPIC-1. The new service is part of LPI’s response to the circumstances created by COVID-19. But it also represents a step towards broadening our mission and making our exams more accessible.

Broader access to LPI’s certification program

LPI exams have traditionally been held physically on-site, and therefore are dependent on external factors and the ability of candidates to travel. So LPI has now enabled its exams on Pearson VUE’s online exam platform, OnVUE. LPI’s Executive Director, G. Matthew Rice, says, “OnVUE gives us the opportunity to improve the availability of our exams during these special times and generally provides a broader access to our certification program.”

Starting with Linux Essentials and LPIC-1

As previously announced, Linux Professional Institute has started its online offerings with the Linux Essentials and LPIC-1 (101 and 102) exams. Currently these exams are offered in English, and other languages are coming soon. The schedule will be announced on our coronavirus page.

What candidates should know

The OnVUE online proctoring platform is available in English language only. Candidates are expected to have a quiet, private location, a reliable computer with a camera, and a stable Internet connection. Currently, only the Windows and MacOS operating systems are supported. As a Linux certification body, we understand this is not ideal for many of our candidates, and we apologize for the inconvenience. We will continue to encourage Pearson VUE to make OnVUE testing available on Linux systems too.

A full list of system requirements, policies and procedures can be found at https://home.pearsonvue.com/lpi/onvue. LPI’s exam prices and lengths remain the same on the OnVUE platform.

We are constantly following the needs of our community and adapting our response and measures to meet the needs of as many potential candidates as we can. For further questions, or to request assistance or special accommodations, please contact LPI at info@lpi.org.
